Yesterday all agencies posted a news that Donald Trump doesn’t want to push the Air Force One project and thinks that it costs too much.
Let’s leave politics and move to aviation and politics… as in this subject they are connected but let’s not look at it from a Trump perspective but form a president perspective.
Machines are just machines. They work as long as they can and than they brake due to wear. The date of a first major breakage can be pushed forward with great maintenance, upgrades and so on. But at some point this will not be enough.
As I’m from Poland I can not forget our problems with the presidential aircraft and I’m not talking about the catastrophe near Smolensk. Let’s leave that aside. There were numerous situations that although the ground crews did what they could, the pilots and cabin crew did what they could and the machine broke. This meant a problem for the president.
Can the USA afford such situations? I think that not. Being the only global power is a burden. Everyone looks at you and waits for your failure – pretenders like when giants fall on its knee, even if it is only a small aircraft malfunction. This shows that even giants are vulnerable.
Should the Air Force One project cost that much? No and Yes. The Marine One project showed that too much money isn’t always a good solution and doesn’t bring expected results. If we look at it from a different perspective the single most important aircraft in the world MUST cost a lot. It is packed with the latest hardware and can be an airborne center to govern a nation and it’s army.
There are no simple answers how to solve this but one thing is certain – a solution has to be made and it must allow the head of the nation to function flawlessly no matter what. Here we are at the beginning of this short text. Machines are just machines – you can not expect them to work for ever. At some point they will brake no matter what.
The administration should work closely with Boeing to find the best possible solution – safety is a top priority but tax payers like to see that their money is spent wisely – maybe meeting at some point would be good?
