The speed with the S-400 system gains market share is astonishing.
First we have heard of Turkey deciding to buy this very sophisticated missile system to bolster it’s defenses. You could expect that this would happen as Turkey has shifted from being West orientated to more independent politics and they have decided that strengthening their ties with Russia in some areas is good for them. Of course it doesn’t mean that they will be “friends” as they have different agendas in the region and in some areas they are competitors. As with other systems from two different camps there is still a problem how to connect them to the network. Probably they will serve as a stand alone systems without tight integration.
Turkey was somehow leading the way but the real blow came from Saudi Arabia. After signing an enormous arms deal with USA some time later they have decided to go for the S-400 as an extra addition to their newly created defense architecture. The Saudis are spending a lot of money on upgrading their army and alongside the F-15SA which is right now as good as it gets in the heavy fighter realm they will have the THAAD and S-400 on top of it.
Just a few days ago another “bomb” exploded – Bahrain wants F-16V but… also the S-400 system. If you add up the interest of Egypt in it, put atop China and India you end up wit a stockpile of countries which is growing and growing. The most astonishing thing is the rapid growth in the Middle East.
This means that we are in the middle of a shift and where will it lead us nobody knows. At this point the oil rich countries will not buy all of their equipment from Russia but a diversification is more than visible.
This means that there is either a green light from the USA for going shopping in Russian or this could mean that USA is backing off even more from the region and doesn’t care that much or… that these are independent decisions of all of the mentioned countries which would have further implications.
The rapid armament buys which we can observe can mean that the tension is growing and countries are getting ready for war which is never good. On the other hand having an S-400 system in their inventory which can fire four different missiles is a real game changer and can boost security massively and act as a deterrent for possible enemies. The most obvious sign is that Russian defense industry is back in the game and still kicking!
